Know Your Vocal Range:
Pick a song sung by an artist whose natural voice matches yours. If you have a deep voice, stick to lower-toned artists rather than forcing yourself to hit high notes that cause straining.
Pick a Song You Actually Know:
The karaoke screen moves fast! Avoid picking a song you have only heard once or twice. Stick to tracks you routinely sing along with in the car or shower so the rhythm is already second nature.
Match the Energy of the Room:
Look at the crowd at the bar before requesting a track. Early in the night, mid-tempo tunes or classic rock tracks work beautifully. Save the massive, high-energy party anthems for later when the venue is completely packed!
Don't Fear the Ballad:
Slower songs are fantastic, but try to pick ones with a strong chorus that the crowd can sway or sing along to. It keeps the room engaged even during a slow number.
Master Microphone Technique
Hold It Like an Ice Cream Cone:
Keep the microphone capsule about 1 to 2 inches away from your mouth, pointing directly at your lips. If it's too far away, the sound system won't catch your voice; if it's too close, your words will sound muddy and distorted.
Don't "Cup" the Mic:
Avoid wrapping your hand tightly around the round wire mesh ball at the top of the microphone. Doing this blocks the sound waves, muffles your voice, and may cause feedback. Always hold it by the solid handle.
The Slider Trick:
Move the microphone further away from your face when you are hitting a massive, loud high note. Bring it back close to your lips when you are singing softly. This keeps your performance smooth and comfortable.
Watch the Speakers:
Never point the microphone directly at the speakers. Pointing a live mic directly at a speaker forms a sound loop that creates instant feedback.
Bring Backup:
You don't have to go up there alone! Grab a friend, a group, or even ask MiKiDe or CC to stand up there with you for a duet. Sharing the stage instantly cuts your nerves in half.
Look Just Over Their Heads:
If making direct eye contact with people at the bar makes you nervous, look at the back wall, a neon sign, or just slightly over the crowd's heads. To the audience, it will look like you are working the room, but you won't feel the pressure of everyone staring back at you.
Lean on the Lyrics:
Remember, the lyrics are right there on the screen in front of you! Once you get through the first verse, muscle memory will take over and the fun begins.
The Crowd is on Your Side:
The number one thing to remember at a Karaoke with CC gig is that nobody is judging you. The entire room is there to sing along and have a blast. They want you to succeed, so embrace the energy and let loose!
